Just breathe

This too shall pass

This Thursday, I’ll be on my way to Florida for a wedding with new friends. I couldn’t be more excited! It also couldn’t come at a time when I was more broke.

I feel like I’ve hit a brick wall in my job search. My plan is to use Florida to reorganize my thoughts and brainstorm for a new strategy.

I have been connecting with companies I am interested in working for, as well as their CEOs on LinkedIn, Twitter, and liking them on Facebook. As my main goal is to use my ability to write and strategize to expand resources for a company or organization, I’ve determined that learning how to use social media in an innovative way to my own advantage can only increase my chances to find a career in which I am utilizing these same skills (plus it is really fun!!!).

For now, this is my strategy, but I need a more proactive approach. I wish I was further into my career or that I had a larger network in the city, but I don’t. I have to use the resources I have on hand and push to create greater ones.

I am a quick learner, a strong writer, a creative planner, a hard worker. I know what I can accomplish if given the opportunity.

Working in a financial field, I have learned things that I never thought I needed to know, but every opportunity leads to a greater one and every experience is a learning process. Not knowing brings challenge, and isn’t that the reason I moved here? I was stagnant, and though I have no desire to make a career out of finance, I believe it is a stepping stone in providing new challenges.

But seriously, what’s with all of these numbers, people? Give me some abstract thought and innovation and I’m golden!!

The Search Continues

I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m not sure which is worse… Not having a job and having the time to look for one, or having a job that doesn’t pay enough with no time to look.

Right now, I’m in the latter category. No clue how I’m going to manage my bills, exhausted from doing something I don’t enjoy, and very little time to find something I do enjoy and will pay the bills. That said, I STILL believe wholeheartedly in my decision to move here and create a new life for myself. I knew it would be difficult, I just didn’t know how difficult and to be quite honest, I haven’t been living like it is.

Frustrated by my inability to find a job and with the craziness of the holidays, admittedly, I let the search slide longer than I should have. Now, I’m paying for it- quite literally.

So here’s the plan:
Get on it!!!
I’ve organized my thoughts, I know what I want. Now I just need to buckle down and make it happen… Use every resource I can possibly use.

I’m tired of being negative to the people I care about and the new people in my life. People want to be surrounded by positive people… Including employers.

I know I want to write- that’s why I started this blog.
I know I love to read- hmm… That fits in somewhere…
I know that I love to organize people and things.
I know that I can’t sit at a desk all day… Unless, of course, I am reading and/or writing.

I have been saying that I want a career in non-profit development, and honestly, I would love it. Mostly, because I am passionate, believe in social change, and believe in the power of an organization to strengthen a community or solve a social problem.

Most of my life however, I have said I would either become an editor or go into advertising/public relations. Yup, so all of those still appeal to me… But something about being an editor in a publishing company suddenly stands out, speaks volumes.

To be around people who love books as much as I do? What more could I ask for? I am in the fast-paced, savvy capital of the world, and I could be surrounded by witty book-lovers? Umm… Yes, please! Publishing also speaks to my interest in both development and the advertising world. Both are necessary components of book sales.

So now it’s just a matter of putting my money (metaphorical money- I don’t have any of the real kind) where my moth is. I know I have what it takes. I know that given the chance, I would add an exceptional energy and determination to any company. That is, given the chance…

My job now is to network… To pool every resource and get creative because within the next couple of months, I better be doing something I care about, no matter how small I have to start!!

Hmm… Maybe this blog will help…

Friendships of Proximity

Friends of Proximity- people who hang out with you/you hang out with out of convenience

When you move to a new city, you experience many emotions- excitement, fear, anxiety, relief… But most commonly, loneliness. For those in relationships, having the man of your dreams doesn’t make you any less lonely. It certainly helps, but as women, girlfriends are essential to our well-being. The most amazing man on earth still won’t be able to fill the void that our friends fill.
As we move away, our friends at home move forward, just as we do. They are living their lives, just as we are beginning new chapters. But in the loneliness of being somewhere new, we begin to feel slighted by our friends and start to feel like an outsider.
Making new friends is a process, but so is keeping the old. With distance, more effort must be made on both ends of the friendship. This is when we learn who our true friends are and this is when it may become apparent that some friendships we’ve spent much time preserving aren’t worth preservation.
For me, unfortunately, it seems that most of my friendships fell under this category. I’m finding that I have maybe two friendships worth keeping, worth making the effort. The others seem to continuously let me down and add to my loneliness. Sometimes it’s better to be alone than to surround yourself with people who don’t give a damn.
I’m making new friends, and I’m sure some of these friends will fall under that category eventually, but hopefully, with maturity and with experience, I am making more fulfilling friendships with people who have my best interests at heart.
Sometimes, friendships of proximity are extremely helpful in coping with loneliness. It is just a matter of not confusing the two types. True friendship is quality over quantity and defies all distance, but in life, especially in transition, we learn that these people are few and far between.

A good week

I have a job! It’s not my dream job, but it’s something. I have a job in New York. Translation: I did it. I changed the direction of my life.

I am beyond ecstatic to be back on a regular schedule with productive things to do. Now I just need to make a little money to get an apartment!!

I’m “coming into my own” as a former role model put it. I guess so. Last night, I had my first all girls outing with new friends from NYC. I have a holiday party with these same girls coming up. I’m a little lonely, but also extremely busy and have very little time to focus on that part of my life. I know that once the dust settles, I’ll feel alone and sad that I wasn’t more focused on the friend thing. I’m very happy with my new relationship, but a guy can never be everything. I learned that when I lost my best friend in my last break up.

But like I said, I’m busy. Plans every night. We are going to see The Who tonight. For free! In a suite! How cool is that? I’m a person who loves to be on the go, and there is always something to do…
Parties, benefits, drinks, food, shopping, sports, concerts, touristy things. I’m in love with this city and all of its money draining wonders.
– uh, just the problem of having no money. I’m so lucky to have people who expose me to so much for free, but I also have to start saving and stop enjoying all of the wonderful food in the city. I’m going to get fat and go broke!! But how can I resist?
Real New York pizza and bagels, ethnic food everywhere, fresh sushi, incredible muffins, cheeses from all over the world!! Doesn’t help that I’m dating a guy who loves bagels and have a cousin who is a pastry chef and lives with a chef!
I really need to buckle down. I’m channeling Elizabeth Gilbert on the indulgence part of her journey. Unfortunately for my waistband, I am not on a trip. This is my new life. Okay. Granted, I am a size 0 and still eat better than most people I know… Just saying, it’s something I need to consider.
I also need to stop channeling Elizabeth Gilbert in her indulgence phase and start channeling Rachel Bertsche who wrote “MWF seeking BFF” in an effort to become more acclimated to the city and my new life. Not a coincidence that I bought that book while in Union Square months before I moved here. Maybe I should re-read it for tips.

Another tangent… I am always cold! I have very inappropriate clothing an shoes for city walking. My feet hurt and I’m freezing!!! I need inexpensive options to solve these problems!!

Off to work… It’s going to be a long day! I cannot wait for the concert tonight!

Something’s Gotta Give

Step one was always GET A JOB! Now, I at least have something to hold me over. I found a hostessing job and am on my way to an interview for a “real job”. That’s not to say that restaurant jobs are not real jobs. Trust me, after 5 years of serving, I can tell you… It’s work. But, it’s not what I went to school to do- and that is the ultimate goal.
Now that I have an income, I can find a place to live! I really miss coming home and cooking dinner or sitting on my own couch with one of my own glasses filled with my own wine. I mean… I did sell my couch… But that’s irrelevant, right?
I am late for my interview… Took the wrong trains and got held up by construction. The problem in New York- you can never anticipate everything. You can never be too early. It’s impossible.
I am so thankful that it’s Friday. That is the reason I don’t want to hostess. I absolutely cherish my weekends. It’s silly and makes me feel like I don’t work hard enough. I love them mostly because of a guy, but in this mass confusion I call my life right now, weekends make sense. I have downtime when the rest of the world has downtime. We do normal date-like things and I always have a lot of fun. Yes, I’m happy because of a guy three days of the week, but the key point here is: I’M HAPPY!

…and I did…

Big choices in life always come with mixed feelings. I haven’t blogged since my first entry because sometimes there was such a lull, I had no idea what to say and sometimes there was so much going on, I had no idea where to start.

I moved to New York City. Me. By myself. I took the leap. No job, no apartment, but surrounded by loving and caring people who supported me every step of the way.

At first, I was ecstatic and confident. I had left behind a job that I was dissatisfied with, a home that I had broken, and the friends I had- I knew they would stick by me regardless of location.

Now, I have my days. The job search is hard, really hard. I know my skills, I articulate them well, but it is very difficult to get your foot in the door without tried and true connections. Don’t get get wrong. I am a great networker. The problem is, in this day and age, so is everyone else. There are days when I feel completely incapable, lost, and alone. Days when I just need a hug and there is no one to give one. Days when I think, I left a great guy and our life together- then realize that while he was wonderful, we weren’t right for each other, I was awful to him, and it is the stability of our life together that I miss. Living with a cousin, without my belongings, things can seem quite unstable.
On the other hand, there are more days that I have total faith in my decisions. Sure I am scared, but if you live in fear of the unknown, you will never take a chance. I am dating someone new- someone I have known for many, many years. He is motivated, communicative, supportive, and fun. He takes me places, shows me things, is innovative. Mostly, it is the communication and support that I appreciate. He makes me feel more capable by discussing things with me.

Job hunting, while frustrating, also has its perks. I try to see the benefits and lessons in the process, and explore a new part of the city and a new coffee shop every day. Writing cover letters helps me to remember my ability to write. I also spend time researching facts about organizations and making comparisons. This reminds me of my strong research skills. I give myself goals everyday and reward myself when I meet them. When I seek things through new avenues, I remind myself that I am creative and innovative. It all helps to pull me out of a slump and boost my self-esteem again.

Today, some things began to come together. I heard back from one organization, a temp agency, and a potential roommate. All make me feel like I worked hard to make something happen, though I am trying not to get my hopes up too high and let myself down.

Chances come with mixed emotions, but I wouldn’t take it back for anything in the world. Many would think I am crazy to give up the stability that I had for uncertainty, and maybe I am. I am not a religious person, but I have faith that everything happens for a reason. I wanted this and I will make it happen, one way or another.

…But I can’t…

I have always been a writer.  I have a lot to say, and the written word has helped me get all of that emotion out, whether by poetry or prose, over the years.  After finishing college and creating this blog, though, it seemed that for once, I had nothing to say.  I knew I had plenty of thoughts, but nothing tangible came to mind to solve any of the issues that I was having in my life or to give any piece of advice to others.  This bothered me for months.  Gradually, my life began to fall apart.  I cheated on my boyfriend of three years with whom I was living.  He was the sweetest man alive.  He would have done anything for me.  He was a soon-to-be Engineer with a kind heart and an amazing family.  Unfortunately, there was something missing, something I could never quite put my finger upon.  That’s sort of how every aspect of my life felt at the beginning of this summer.  I was happy enough, but something was missing.

Years ago, I wrote a poem called “I am the Hurricane”.  I refer to myself as being seen by others as the eye, that they will not see the destruction I cause until it is too late.  That may be a little bit melodramatic, as most things written by 17 year old girls have the power to be, but it also portrays this summer quite well.  I, at the center of the destruction I created, could not see past the debris.  I wallowed in the wreckage of my relationship.
At the same time, my parents had just sold my childhood home, were living in a rental home and were in the process of purchasing yet another home.  My job was (is) less than to be desired, and my car completely died on me and failed to pass inspection.  Having committed such sins against such a nice guy in a small town, my friends were not exactly on my side. A few stuck by me, but for the most part, I felt very alone.

Some people fall with grace and get back up slowly and with just as much grace.  Others, like me, need to hit rock bottom and risk being painted all over the concrete before they can get back up.  Fortunately, the second type, though we may be the train wreck you can’t help but stare at for a brief moment, we tend to bounce back a lot faster and learn the larger lesson a lot more effectively.  At least, that’s what I would like to believe.  I found that during this time, like the bewildered period of time before it, I could not get any words onto paper or a screen.  I couldn’t move, couldn’t function.  But one day, I snapped out of it.
Suddenly, I saw beauty everywhere again, a quality I had lost for a while.  I felt capable of changing the world again.  See, that’s what I want to do.  I want to change the world.  I want to make it a better place, you, know, like everyone else does.  But during my low period, I forgot the qualities that exist in me that make me capable of having a hand in doing so.  I forgot the things that I love.

I should tell you how I ended up in this guilty spot.  I cheated on my boyfriend, the engineer, with a guy who will never in a million years amount to the person that my boyfriend was.  He will never be as accomplished, and he will never be as kind.  He, however, was extremely adventurous and had just gotten back from teaching English in Thailand.  What I did with him was in no way worth losing the relationship, especially the friendship, that I had with Matt.  The guilt ate at every part of my soul and made me feel incapable of helping others, which is what I have always wanted to do.  How could I possibly help others to achieve a positive life experience if all I could do was screw up my own?  At one point, my parents were buying a house that I could not live in with them, I was running away to the beach every weekend, and when I wasn’t doing that, I was crying in the bathroom at work, or crying myself into an insomnia- a constant migrained, comatose state, in my room.  At that point, I had hit the bottom of the barrel, but somehow managed to secure a job interview out of town.

The interview wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, nor was the area where I would have to move, and I didn’t get the job.  That weekend, I decided to travel.  I went out in Philly and I took a bus to New York City.  On the bus ride, I began to see beauty again.  I began to realize that all of this had a purpose.  There had been something missing in my life, and while I could have chosen a much better way to do it, my need for having to shake myself free from the stagnant life I was living was not a bad thing.  Take the cheating out of it, and it is truly a positive quality to know when you are unhappy, to want bigger things for your life, and to go after them.  No, I am not condoning what I did, and I am so sorry that such an amazing person had to get hurt in the process, but it forced me to change.  It forced me to make changes that I had been dancing around for years.  I had put myself in a position to have no other choice.  Sometimes, you need to test yourself, to corner yourself in order to learn from yourself.

I am currently looking for jobs in New York City, possibly moving in with family for a little bit, my parents are moving today, and all of my belongings are in storage.  My life is a mess right now, but something about it is invigorating to me.  I am headed to the city to visit a friend for the weekend with resumes in hand, and am using my imagination to land jobs.  The world is truly open to me for the first time in a long time.  I’ll let you know how it goes…
